Respect, Recognition, Pride and Action
Every worker deserves to be recognised and respected for who they are. For transgender workers, having the correct name displayed in workplace systems and rosters is an important part of inclusion that all workplaces should follow.
For more than 18 months, one of our members repeatedly asked their employer to update their name in workplace systems and rosters. Despite raising the issue on numerous occasions, the member's deadname continued to appear across the employer's IT systems, creating ongoing distress and frustration.
For transgender workers, being correctly identified by their name is not just an administrative matter – it is about recognition, inclusion and respect for who they are.
After exhausting their own efforts to have the issue addressed, the member contacted The Services Union for support.
Our Union listened to the member's concerns and quickly took action. We wrote directly to the employer, outlining the issue and requesting that the member's name be updated across all relevant workplace systems and rosters.
Following our Union's intervention, the employer agreed to make the necessary changes. Within weeks, the issue that had remained unresolved for almost two years, was finally fixed.
This win highlights the importance of having our Union in your corner.
When members face workplace issues alone, they can often be ignored or delayed.
When workers stand together through our Union, employers are far more likely to listen and act.
For this member, the outcome meant more than a name change on a roster. It meant being recognised, respected and valued in their workplace.
It's another example of The Services Union standing up for fairness, dignity and respect at work for all members.
